Lectins are the Bad Boys of Nutrition: Why You Need to Ditch Them
Have you ever heard of lectins? They are a type of protein found in many plant-based foods,
like beans, grains and nuts. While they may seem harmless, recent research suggests they can
be quite harmful to our health. Which is why Hail Merry’s commitment to using only blanched,
raw almonds is great news for your health!
First, let's talk about what lectins are and why they can be problematic. Lectins acts as a
defense mechanism for plants, helping them protect against insects and other animals that
might eat them. However, in humans, lectins can interfere with the absorption of beneficial
nutrients, leading to inflammation, digestive issues and other chronic health problems. Some
lectins can even bind to human tissues and cause autoimmune responses, leading to conditions
like arthritis or Type 1 diabetes.
Many plant-based foods contain lectins, and some people are more sensitive to them than
others. While eating lectins in small amounts may not necessarily cause an immediate reaction,
long-term exposure can cause significant damage to our health. This is why it's important to be
aware of which foods contain high levels of lectins and limit our intake.
Almonds are a delicious and healthy snack that provide essential nutrients like healthy fats,
fiber, and protein. However, almond skins contain high levels of lectins, putting them on the list
of snacks to limit. Hail Merry uses raw blanched almond flour in our recipes, mostly because it
provides a better texture and mouthfeel. The bonus is our blanched almond flour is void of
lectins. WIN, WIN!
Lectins can be harmful to our health and it's important to be aware of which foods contain them.
